THE CASE OF AILEEN WUORNOS

Aileen Wuornos was a female serial killer. She murdered and robbed 7 men. She was born Aileen Carol Pittman on 29 February 1956 in Rochester, Michigan, USA. She never met her father. Her mother, Diane Wuoronos was only 14 when she married. She was 15 when she had a son. However she filed for divorce when she was expecting a daughter. Aileen's mother abandoned her when she was 4 years old. Aileen and her brother were left to the care of their mother's parents. Aileen had a son at the age of 14. He was given up for adoption. Soon afterwards her grandfather threw her out of the house. Aileen supported herself by prostitution. In 1974 Wuornos was jailed for driving under the influence, disorderly conduct and firing a gun from a vehicle.
In 1976 Aileen moved to Florida and married an elderly man named Lewis Gratz Fell. The marriage lasted only a matter of weeks. Fell took out a restraining order when Aileen hit him with his own cane. Wuornos returned to Michigan and she was jailed for assault after she threw a cue ball at a bartenders head. Fell had the marriage annulled. Then in 1981 Aileen Wuornos robbed a store in Florida. She was sent to jail but she was released in 1983. However in 1984 she was arrested again for attempting to pass forged checks in a bank. In January 1986 she was arrested for car theft, resisting arrest and obstruction. A male companion also accused her of attempting to rob him at gunpoint.
In 1986 Aileen Wuornos met a woman named Tyria Moore. The two became lovers.
The Murders by Aileen Wuornos
The first victim of Aileen Wuornos was a 51 year old store owner named Richard Mallory. He had the misfortune to meet Wuornos on 30 November 1989. Wuornos shot him several times and stole the money from his wallet. The next victim was a 43 year old construction worker named David Spears. In May 1990 Wuornos shot him several times. she stole his vehicle but later abandoned it. The third victim was a 40 year old man named Charles Carskaddon. In June 1990 Wuornos shot him and stole his money and jewelry. Next Wuornos murdered a 65 year old man named Peter Siems, in June 1990. She stole his car. Later she and Moore abandoned the car after it crashed but they were seen by witnesses.
In July 1990 Aileen Wuornos murdered a 50 year old man called Troy Burress. She then murdered a 56 year old man named Charles Humphreys in September 1990. The last victim was Walter Antonio in November 1990. However in December 1990 Police also found items stolen from the victims in pawn shops. They found a thumbprint on a receipt which they identified as belonging to Wuornos. Aileen Wuornos was finally arrested in January 1991 on an outstanding warrant. Tyria Moore then assisted the police, letting them record phone conversations between herself and Wuornos. Eventually Wuornos confessed to killing men.
The Trial and Execution of Aileen Wuornos
Aileen Wuornos was charged with the first degree murder of Richard Mallory. She was found guilty on 27 January 1992. She was sentenced to death on 31 January 1992. Wuornos was found guilty of 5 more murders and received 5 more death sentences. (She was not convicted of the murder of Peter Siems as his body was never found). Aileen Wuornos was executed by lethal injection in Florida State Prison on 9 October 2002. She was 46.
In 2003 a film called Monster was made about Aileen Wuornos. Charlize Theron played Wuornos.
